Cincinnati Reds outfielder Dane Myers returned negative X-ray results after crashing into an outfield wall, manager Terry Francona announced.
Francona provided an update on Myers’ status Monday night. The Reds outfielder was injured when he made an acrobatic catch in the fourth inning of a 5-3 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday in Milwaukee.
Myers was X-rayed for broken bones at American Family Field. The Reds then opted to have him examined out by off-site doctors.
“We sent him to the hospital because he was in so much pain and so uncomfortable,” Francona said. “The kid was really hurting and it wasn’t going away. They want to check for a lot of things. You saw how violent it was, and he was really in pain.”
Francona did not specify where Myers was injured, but cited potential issues with his shoulder, neck and head. He also said he wasn’t sure Myers “really knew where he was” as he appeared dazed after the collision.
The Reds carried a 1-0 lead, thanks to a first-inning RBI double from Myers, into the bottom of the fourth. Brewers first baseman Andrew Vaughn settled in against Reds starter Nick Lodolo to lead off the half inning. Vaughn hit the second pitch of the exchange 103.5 mph into left center field. Myers raced to the warning track and threw his gloved left hand up to snag the first out of half inning.
He then stumbled, tumbled and hit the wall with his left shoulder. Myers, who lost his hat but kept the ball secure during the sequence, remained on the ground, where he showed signs of discomfort.
He was then tended to by medical personnel and replaced by T.J. Friedl.
The Reds went on to take a 3-0 lead when designed hitter Elly De La Cruz hit a 412-foot, two-run homer in the top of the next inning.
But the Brewers didn’t allow another run. They struck for their first two runs in the sixth. Second baseman Brice Turang tied the score with a 418-foot solo homer in the seventh.
Fellow Brewers infielder Joey Ortiz plated the go-ahead runs with a 412-foot, two-run shot in the eighth.
Myers, who is hitting .256 this season, went 1 for 2 in the loss. Left fielder J.J. Bleday was the only Reds player to reach base more than once. He went 1 for 3 with a walk.
Vaughn and right fielder Sal Frelick each went 2 for 3 for the Brewers, who handed the Reds their fifth loss in seven games.
The Reds (39-44) remain in last place in the National League Central, 12.5 games behind the division-leading Brewers (51-31).
The Brewers will host the Reds in the second game of the series at 7:40 p.m. EDT Tuesday in Milwaukee.
