Miami Dolphins running back De’Von Achane, who is dealing with a calf injury, is on track to play in Week 1, general manager Chris Grier said Wednesday.
For fantasy football purposes, the positive update on Achane is solid news for those who covet him going into drafts.
Achane remains a Top 10 option and is the No. 8 player in my Top 75 running back rankings. He is capable of elite production, but still carries injury risk. I would target Achane late in the first round or early in the second round, if he is still available.
Look for more than 1,500 yards from scrimmage and a double-digit touchdown total from the third-year weapon.
Grier provided the update on the injured running back during a news conference at the Baptist Health Training Complex in Miami Gardens, Fla. Achane missed the last two weeks of practice and two preseason games due to the issue.
“All indications for us is that Achane will be ready, Week 1, to go,” Grier said.
The Dolphins have leaned on rookie Ollie Gordon II, who started the off-season at the bottom of the depth chart, as of late due to injuries to Achane and second-string option Jaylen Wright.
Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said Saturday that Achane experienced no setbacks with his calf injury and he looked forward to his return to practice.
McDaniel also said that Wright, who is dealing with a leg injury, is “week to week” and expected to miss their season opener. Gordon, the Dolphins’ most productive running back this preseason, totaled 126 yards on 26 carries in his first three appearances for the team.
Grier said Wednesday that the Dolphins, who released running backs Aaron Shampklin and Mike Boone during the final wave of 53-man roster cuts, were in the negotiation process to acquire depth at the position.
“We’ll end up adding a couple guys to the practice squad — veterans,” Grier said. “We’ve been talking to people here last night and today so there will be some veterans here or maybe a younger player, too, we’ll add in that are good players that will fit the system that we know will be able to play.”
Achane and the Dolphins will battle the Indianapolis Colts in their 2025 season opener Sept. 7 in Indianapolis.
