The New York Jets hired former Indianapolis Colts and Carolina Panthers coach Frank Reich as their offensive coordinator, they announced Wednesday.
Reich, who played quarterback for the Jets in 1996, served as a senior adviser and interim coach at Stanford last season. He will replace Tanner Engstrand, who was fired last week.
The 2025 Jets totaled the 29th-fewest yards and points in the NFL last season. They ranked last in passing and 10th in rushing.
Stanford ranked No. 123 out of 136 NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision teams in yards per game (306.5). The Cardinal (4-8) ranked 122nd in points per game (18.8).
“Frank has a rare combination of experience, creativity and calm under pressure,” Jets coach Aaron Glenn said in a news release. “He’s lived this game from every angle — as a quarterback in this league and as a coach who’s led offenses at the highest level.
“He is unique in his ability to see the game for what it is right now and adapt when appropriate. Frank understands offense and how to utilize the strengths of players. I am looking forward to how he will help this team have success.”
Reich participated in an in-person interview with the Jets on Tuesday.
The Jets, who hired Brian Duker as their defensive coordinator Jan. 28, also interviewed Darrell Bevell, Ronald Curry, Greg Roman and Lunda Wells in their search for an offensive coordinator.
