The Detroit Tigers and rookie shortstop Kevin McGonigle agreed to an eight-year, $150 million contract extension, the team announced Wednesday.
The fully guaranteed pact will keep McGonigle under contract through the 2034 season. Escalators over the final three seasons of the contract could push its total value to $160 million.
McGonigle joined the Tigers as the No. 37 overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft. He hit .308 with 25 home runs, six triples, 51 doubles, 40 stolen bases, 130 RBIs and 135 runs scored over his first 183 minor league appearances.
McGonigle, who made his Tigers debut March 26, went 19 for 61 (.311), with six doubles, a triple, home run, stolen base, eight RBIs and 12 runs scored through his first 17 MLB appearances. He hit his first career home run in an 8-2 win over the Miami Marlins on Sunday in Detroit.
The 21-year-old infielder will earn $1 million next season. That will jump to $7 million in 2028 and $16 million in 2028. McGonigle is on track to earn additional guaranteed salaries of $21 million in 2030, $22 million in 2031 and $23 million in 2032, 2033 and 2034.
His pact includes a $14 million signing bonus and $5 million assignment bonus for each time the contract is assigned to another MLB franchise.
The Tigers rookie is baseball’s No. 2 overall prospect, behind only Konnor Griffin of the Pittsburgh Pirates, according to MLB Pipeline.
The Tigers (8-9), who are on a four-game winning streak, sit in third place the American League Central, 2.5 games behind the division-leading Minnesota Twins (11-7). They are 1.5 games behind the second-place Cleveland Guardians (10-8).
McGonigle and the Tigers will host the fourth-place Kansas City Royals (7-10) at 6:40 p.m. EDT Wednesday in Detroit.
